Cixi, a county-level city in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, is one of China's largest production bases for cotton slippers. Its supply chain is undergoing a profound transformation from traditional manufacturing to smart, green, and globalized operations. During recent visits to factories and trading companies in Cixi, we found that the Cixi cotton slippers supply chain is highly active in automation, cross-border e-commerce, and emerging markets, offering overseas buyers more stable and flexible sourcing options.
Cixi's cotton slipper industry began in the 1990s and has now formed a complete supporting system covering fabrics, soles, embroidery, and packaging. In towns such as Xiaolin and Qiaotou, the Cixi cotton slipper industrial belt gathers hundreds of cotton slipper manufacturers, with an annual output of over several hundred million pairs. In recent years, local enterprises have accelerated the introduction of automatic cutting machines, computerized embroidery machines, and smart warehousing systems, boosting production efficiency by about 30%. A factory manager with annual exports exceeding 50 million yuan said: "In the past, we relied on manual labor. Now one line needs only a few workers to monitor, and delivery time has been shortened from 45 days to 25 days."
Affected by inflation and consumption downgrading in Europe and the US, traditional orders have become fragmented. However, the Cixi cotton slippers supply chain, with its quick response capability, has taken on many small-batch, multi-variety orders. Meanwhile, after the RCEP took effect, markets in Japan, South Korea, and Southeast Asia have grown significantly. According to Cixi Customs data, in the first three quarters of 2024, Cixi's cotton slipper exports increased by 12% year-on-year, with exports to ASEAN growing by nearly 20%. Cotton slipper manufacturers are focusing on eco-friendly fabrics and antibacterial functions to enhance added value with differentiated products.
In the Cixi cotton slipper industrial belt, more and more companies are using recyclable cotton, bamboo fiber, and other materials, and applying for GRS certification. Live-streaming e-commerce and cross-border e-commerce platforms are also forcing factories to transform. Some enterprises have established overseas warehouses to achieve "small orders, quick response." Industry insiders predict that in the next three years, the Cixi cotton slippers supply chain will accelerate toward branding and digitalization. Overseas buyers may focus on factories with independent R&D capabilities.
Overall, the Cixi cotton slipper industry is shifting from "price advantage" to "value advantage," providing global buyers with more efficient and greener supply chain support.
