Entering the fourth quarter, the cotton slippers industry cluster in Cixi and Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, is bustling with activity. As a major home footwear production base in China, the two regions host hundreds of cotton slipper manufacturers, with products exported to Europe, America, Japan, and South Korea. According to Ningbo Customs statistics, in the first three quarters of this year, the total export value of cotton slippers from Cixi and Ningbo ports increased by about 18% year-on-year, with winter warm cotton slippers accounting for over 60%, becoming the main driver of growth.
"Overseas buyers are demanding higher warmth performance, especially customers from Northern Europe and North America. They prefer winter warm cotton slippers with thick fleece and anti-slip soles," said the manager of one of the cotton slipper manufacturers in Cixi with annual exports exceeding 50 million yuan. To meet demand, local companies are introducing automated cutting and sewing equipment to boost capacity while ensuring consistent quality.
In addition to traditional foreign trade channels, cotton slippers enterprises in Cixi and Ningbo are accelerating their layout in cross-border e-commerce. Through platforms like Amazon and Temu, they directly reach small and medium-sized overseas buyers. According to the Ningbo Commerce Bureau, in the first three quarters, cross-border e-commerce exports of cotton slippers from the two regions grew by 35% year-on-year, becoming a new growth pole for the industrial belt.
Market trends also indicate a shift towards multifunctional designs. A recent survey by the China Textile Import and Export Chamber shows that 45% of overseas buyers now prioritize eco-friendly materials in cotton slippers. In response, Cixi and Ningbo manufacturers are developing biodegradable soles and organic cotton uppers. "We have seen a 20% increase in inquiries for sustainable cotton slippers this year," said a sales director at a Ningbo-based exporter.
Challenges remain, however. Rising labor costs and stricter environmental regulations are pushing small workshops out of the market. Yet this consolidation is creating opportunities for larger, more efficient cotton slipper manufacturers in Cixi and Ningbo. The local government is encouraging mergers and acquisitions to build stronger brands. With the winter season approaching, industry insiders expect export orders to remain robust through the first quarter of next year.
Looking ahead, as global consumers place more emphasis on home comfort, demand for cotton slippers is expected to continue growing. The industrial belt in Cixi and Ningbo needs to continue its transformation towards intelligence and green development to maintain competitiveness in the international market.
